What is Tea Made From?
The word “tea” refers to anything made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. Farmers grow tea plants in settings that range from smallholder gardens to vast plantations.
To simplify harvesting, they prune tea plants into bushes, though these plants can naturally reach 20 feet tall. Generally, growers use the top bud and the first two leaves to produce tea. As a result, the highest-quality teas often come from these carefully selected parts of the plant.
How Do Farmers Grow and Harvest Tea?
Farmers cultivate premium teas at high altitudes and on slopes, where manual plucking is necessary. In fact, workers need around four to five kilos of fresh leaves to produce just one kilo of finished tea.
However, large-scale commercial tea farms grow plants in flat, low-altitude areas to allow mechanical harvesting. Interestingly, even some of the finest hand-plucked specialty teas come from flat regions.
Therefore, elevation is just one factor in determining tea quality. Additionally, craftsmanship plays a critical role in creating the best teas.
